Hello! As many of us, I own the three DVD set for "The Lord of the Rings." Of the three, I find myself drawn the most to the first DVD, "The Fellowship of the Ring." I wasn't sure why. The second and third movies have wonderful battle scenes filled with daring, good acting, and a dash of humor.
Watching "The Fellowship of the Ring" again, I noticed the wonderful lighting that was used to create mood, advance the story, and focus in on individual actors as they spoke their lines. I think, for me, the cinematography of the first film is more appealing the last two films. Each time I watch it, I see something new.

On a general note, for me, one weakness of the films compared to the books is that the Nazgul aren't nearly frightening enough. In the book, just the cry of the Nazgul was enough to paralyze opponents with fear. Merry was paralyzed after stabbing the Nazgul king in the calf. Gandalf said he should have been born from the field "in honor" because no other man would have been able to strike such a blow.
To me, the Nazgul in the films are scary because they are very powerful, not because they are incredibly evil. When they battle on their flying steeds, they seem more like dive bombers than servants of evil incarnate.
I miss Tolkein's characterization of the Nazgul when I watch the films. Best regards.

I like the first best too. And I have to agree with you about the Nazgul, except for how they're portrayed in "Fellowship." The scene where they enter the inn to kill Frodo and company reminded me of Gothic horror.

I liked the first the best out of them all

But they were great movies

And my Dad read the books, but he said it would be too confusing for me to read and understand it Shocked

Oh, I've read the books too. The first time when I was nine years old. They can be confusing, but that's mainly because of the way they were written. The language is awkward and perhaps a bit archaic, even.

But, although the character development is minimal it is not completely non-existent, and the story is still wonderful regeardless.

One other thing I wished the movies had presented better that I thought really gave the books impact - the hobbits resistance to the temptation to the ring that no one was able to withstand. It was for this reason that they could be considered among the great and wise, because in that case, they were greater than the great and wise.
The movies seemed to lower Frodo into simply the Bearer, while in the books, he was much more. Best regards.
